New Ideas This week we’re going to cover a topic you probably don’t think about very often: Ergonomics. The majority of accidents and time loss from work are caused by strains. Ergonomics is the science of creating jobs, equipment, and workplaces that fit the employees in order to avoid strain and pain. Keeping your employees safe and comfortable can ensure that jobs get done in an effective and efficient manner. Is your office practicing ergonomics effectively? Here are some ergonomic strategies that will keep your employees safe and productive: - Arrange the workplace: When setting up a workspace, minimize the distance you have to reach for your tools. Place items used most often closer to you and items used less often further away.
- Computers and Body Fatigue: Continuously using the computer can cause discomfort in the back, neck, wrists, and arms. To avoid discomfort, try to sit in different postures throughout the day.
- Take breaks to get up and walk around periodically.
- Maintaining Good Work Habits: Performing different tasks prevents repetitiveness and improves productivity.
- Place your computer monitor at least 18 to 30 inches from your eyes and ensure that it is at the correct height.
- Adjust chair to ensure your back is in line with the chair.
- Keep wrists straight while typing to avoid stress.
- Deep breathing regularly can reduce muscle tension.
- Exercise: Taking short breaks and stretching can reduce stress on your body. Here are a few exercises you can do during breaks:
- Massaging hands and fingers reduce cramps and stiffness.
- Shoulder shrugs can help reduce tension in the neck and back
